Technological innovations of 2018 hearing aids
The hearing aids industry, like all technological industries, takes advantage of innovations in different fields of science and conducts continuous research, to implement improvements in the devices, to improve the quality of life of hearing aid users, who see benefited significantly, through personalized, discreet hearing solutions that are compatible with the needs of people who do not hear well.
The different manufacturers have implemented in their devices, different forms of communication with other technologies, such as computers, telephones, televisions, music players, etc., allowing the user to access the daily life, so that it already differentiates them from people who hear well, is not significant.
Among the features offered by these hearing aids of the new technological age, the internet of things, are:
Connection to wireless networks and internet, which allows the hearing aid to record and store biometric information of the patient, such as pulse, distance of travel, the different listening programs used, making self-adjustments by geolocation to improve listening, identification of the place where the hearing aid is in case of loss.
Remote settings, through teleaudiology, which allows the patient to access the programming of their hearing aids even thousands of kilometers from their bedside audiologist. This also allows sending or receiving audio messages, or for example answering calls or scheduling audio reminders, for medical appointments.
Wireless communication with all kinds of electronic devices, indispensable in today's everyday life, such as smart phones, televisions, computers and others.
Compatibility with phone or computer applications, friendly with operating systems such as Android, IOS or Windows, which allows the patient to have greater control of listening situations and the programming of their hearing aids.
Rechargeable systems, in the past, the user of hearing aids had to invest significant annual sums of money, in the purchase of disposable batteries that later contaminate the environment. With the advent of rechargeable technology in hearing aids, the patient places his hearing aids on a charging base at night and the next day simply enjoy hours of uninterrupted use, listening in different environments or through their mobile devices, hours of "Streaming" of content in video or audio formats. The biggest advantage that users have received, especially the elderly, is the advantage of not having to open the battery holder to change the tiny batteries of their hearing aids or remove them every night so that they do not discharge, this has significantly improved the quality of life of people who use hearing aids and their families.
Resistance to dust and moisture, With the appearance of IP certified hearing aids such as smart phones, these devices are now much more resistant to the entry of dust or moisture, factors in yesteryear, or in lower technologies, were determinants of the duration of the headphones. We must remember that the hearing aid is a sound amplifier, an electronic device that is worn on the body throughout the day and exposes it to all kinds of environmental aggressions such as humidity from rain, sweat or water, and also to the entrance of dust, aspects that deteriorate its components. The certification against entry of dust and moisture resistance has meant an invaluable benefit for people who do not hear well and require their hearing aids to stay connected and socially active.
Wireless communication with hearing aid devices, the new hearing aids incorporate wireless communication antennas that allow them to communicate with devices remotely, especially microphones, this is crucial for people with difficulty discriminating words in noisy environments, especially for people with severe hearing disorders, neural , for students who need to hear the teacher very clearly and for professionals or university students. This technology allows the elimination of acoustic barriers such as distance, background noise and echo in noisy places such as restaurants, cafeterias, family reunions, classrooms, churches, training facilities, etc.
The improvement of the quality of life provided by this technology is very significant for people with hearing disabilities.
All these and other technological advantages are available for the users of hearing aids, the investigation of the hearing needs of people who do not hear well, go ahead and surely that in 2019 will come new and interesting advances in the development of this devices.
Unfortunatley the social security authorities in Costa Rica, are not taking in count all of these advantages, we need to ask to the decision makers why they are only thinking about the price, and not the most important aspect: the people...

Audiology 2018, The best practice in the Costa Rican context
Scientific knowledge is built on fundamental pillars that are in the research and work method.
For the results to be validated and reliable, they need to be reproducible. Based on data obtained from the investigation.
Audiology is the science that studies hearing and the disorders that occur in it, as well as in the rehabilitation of people with hearing impairment, especially those that have no solution through medical or surgical means.
The audiology must evolve in each individual that exercises it, in each place where it is practiced and requires the cooperation of all, by sharing knowledge through the available means of communication. All this to make available to those who require audiological services, the best practices and the best results, based on scientific evidence.
There are particularly sensitive areas, due to the impact of professional actions on the lives of people who receive the service, for example:
The techniques of asepsis and infection control
The programming of otoprosthesis and cochlear implants
The pediatric prosthetic adaptation
Pediatric auditory evaluation
These examples and all the techniques of audiology should be under constant review, in order to offer the best of science, with the least risk and providing the maximum benefit for the hearing health of the people.
The best practice is the continuous effort of the professional, of the students, of the teaching staff and all those who practice or teach the audiological profession, in search of excellence, of offering the best available and that has proven to be the most beneficial for each patient in particular, in a fair, altruistic and humanistic manner.
It is necessary to open a way of consensus, of dialogue, in Costa Rica, the author believes that it should be in the headquarters of the Therapists Association, in the Universities, from professional independence, professionals and students, to generate knowledge and to question all the truths accepted as absolute until today.
